Thank you...

Written on January 10, 2012, 1030pm

I am overwhelmed with ALL YOUR GREETING POSTS and TEXT MESSAGES.  I read all of them (and will still read ). I can’t reply to each of you BUT I AM THANKING YOU ALL through this message.  I FEEL THE LOVE. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Yesterday, my brother and mom asked if I am available for dinner the following day. I said, “No! I can’t. I have class and many things to attend to,” then I asked, “Why would we have dinner?,” to which they both replied, “It’s your birthday!

Believe it or not, I COMPLETELY FORGOT that it will be my birthday today!  January 10.

Yesterday I was awake since 3 o’clock in the morning.  I was so stressed out and preoccupied with a pleading that my groupmates had to file and beat a deadline at the post office at 430pm.  I totally forgot it will be my birthday today.

Today, I woke up at 4am and the first thing that popped in my mind are the readings for Special Proceedings which I need to finish before class starts at 3pm. I was just reminded again that I was born on this day by a knock on the door by mom and said, “Happy Birthday and kissed me on the forehead.” OH, YAH, IT IS MY BIRTHDAY TODAY.

I fell asleep while studying (due the hangover from yesterday) that I was only able to read 50% of the coverage for today.  I still decided to go to class awhile ago despite of it and prayed fervently  “Our Father, 3 Hail Mary’s and 1 Glory Be” as I drove to school (which is my habit when I ask God not to be called for recitation).

I arrived and entered an empty classroom. Voila! The class was cancelled.  We were just required to attend a forum on impeachment. GOD HEARD ME.

The only academic activity on my birthday. Listen to speakers Cong. Angara and Cong. Quimbo, UP LAW ALUMNI and  primemovers of the Impeachment Complaint against
CJ Corona at the forum.

After the forum, I left school and passed by Commonwealth Avenue.  A lot, I mean QUITE A LOT of MMDA officers were scattered on the wide accident prone avenue. They caught some cars violating the odd-even number scheme.  I just by-passed and looked at the MMDAs and the cars they caught and tried to stop. When I arrived home my mom texted me, “Naomi hindi ka pwede umalis hanggang mag-7 pm kasi bawal ang sasakyan mo.”

I COMPLETELY FORGOT that my car with a plate no. ending with “4”  was not allowed today (plate no.’s 3s and 4s violate the odd-even number scheme on Tuesdays 3 to 7pm).   I really find it WEIRD that none of the MMDAs tried to stop me.  I just passed them by. Without worries. I narrated this to my mom and we both agreed, “Well, it is because it is my birthday.” And GOD HEARD ME.

This day, everything just fell right into place.

Today, I did not celebrate. I worked, studied, went to school and back home (The usual tiring and stressful routine). Mom and Nick just gave me a small round cake.  They had cooked pancit which we all finished together with Ate Angie, our house-help.  This day, God took care of all my worries and everything just fell right into place.

Today I did not celebrate a party, but I celebrate in GOD’S LOVE.

Thank God for FAMILY,
thank God for FRIENDS,
thank God for CANCELLED CLASS,
thank God I was NOT caught by the MMDA,
thank God for FOOD,
thank God for BIRTHDAYS,
and most of all THANK GOD for YOU.

My Christmas & Birthday Wishlist

Since my birthday lands on January 10, most people give me Christmas gifts which they also say they are their Birthday gifts for me.  I don't bother. Why? Because I am merely the recipient. Can't force and pound repeatedly on their brains that Christmases are different from Birthdays. So...

Here is my Christmas/Birthday Wish List:
(TO BE UPDATED FROM TIME TO TIME)

Digital Video Camera (handy cam type; my no. 1 preferred gift) - Need not be be very expensive.  The small ones, as small as cellphones will do, like Flip (less than $200 or $100 at Amazon preferably Flip UltraHD Video Camera - Black, 8 GB, 2 Hours (3rd Generation) NEWEST MODEL).  But a Sony Handycam HDR-CX130 or Canon DV-MV830i would really be great :)

SONY

CANON

Blackberry Cover Case - this type please. Need not be expensive. Can't use the other types (such as those I need to open like a luggage and remove the phone then return it back -  that takes too much time; I want something quick to open and close).
My Phone is Blackberry Curve 9300 (2010 edition) which looks like this:

Blackberry Rubber Cover - (preferably black or white)

Book: Finishing the Hat by Stephen Sondheim

Soft Shorts Pantulog
Tank Top Soft Cotton (either pambahay or pang-jogging ko lang), not the tight ones :)

Travel Pack Soft pull tissue (the one inside a plastic pack). Kleenex or any other brand will do. I prefer this as substitute to a hanky.

Dove Bar Soap (not liquid, I am allergic to it; preferably scented i.e. the green one)

Dove Liquid Roll On Deodorant (NOT the wax type; has to be liquid; preferably scented i.e. the green one)

Loose & Nicely Colored/Painted Shirts (such as Friday, Kwan YIn, Mona Lisa, Warhol bought at Legaspi Sunday Market. Please look for "Happy Star Child" +639178311936 - recommended by Amor Maclang) or anything similar to these.

Danny Velasquez , "The Man and His Music" at 80

The celebrity pianist of his generation and performing on TV Shows in his younger years, my Uncle Danny Velasquez will be celebrating a birthday concert on November 11, 2011.

My first cousin Danny is celebrating his 80th b-day on 11.11.11. His loving family has prepared something unique & memorable for this momentous event. One gets a hint of this on the kind of invitation that he sent.  Indeed, I am anxious to find out. My blood relationship with him is very close. In law parlance it is in the first civil degree of consanguinity or first cousin on my father's side. My father and his mother are brother and sister that's why.

"Manong Danny", as we fondly call him, is a man of many talents. Among others, he is a lawyer by profession (pre-law Ateneo, law proper U.P.), a pianist by avocation. Indeed, this two persona dwells prominently in him as although he was busy in the corporate world, he had time for his music.

In his younger days, he had a TV show together with his friends who were also professionals & musicians at the same time. Of course he was the pianist in the group. I recall it was Dee Marquez, a popular TV personality at that time, who hosted that show.

He has had two(2), yes two, heart by-passes already and as a result his speech is slurred. But he continues with his music even if he had undergone some of life's heavy challenges and the more my silent admiration for him increases. He had inspired me in more ways than one.

Happy 80th birthday Manong Danny and may you have more to come.

God bless!
~ Written by my dad (Atty. Nestor T. Corpuz)

Uncle Danny Corpuz -Velasquez, is a very dear Uncle to me. He has always been supportive of my singing.  In his healthier and younger days, he would play the piano at our QC house and I would sing along.

When I was a kid he would always attend my singing competitions.  He was there when I won 1st place in an inter-school singing competition held at Ateneo Gradeschool when I was 12.  He was holding my trophy so tight as if he also had won and his smile never faded even after we left the venue. He was also there when I lost as a finalist when I was 14 in the National level of NAMCYA (National Music Competition for Young Artists) for Vocal Solo held at U.P. Wilfrido Guerrerro Theater and I also saw the sadness filled on his face.  In almost every singing engagement I had, whether I performed well or badly, he was there

This was when he was in his healthier years.

I have not seen him very often since then.  He got weak and suffered 2 heart attacks but still survived. He once called the house landline and explained to me that he almost died.  He was asking if my sister Nina who works at ABS-CBN has connections with Jericho Rosales because he wanted a surprise gift for his partner Lita to meet the actor in person.  That is how he loved Lita so much (who had a crush on Jericho). And yes, Lita was able to meet the actor Jericho Rosales thereafter.

Uncle Danny is turning 80 and I am glad and proud despite the speech defect and 2 heart bypasses he went through, his hands can still play and will once again produce the wonderful music we used to hear.
